Business casual can be kind of confusing. As a general rule, if you are confused, go with an outfit that looks more business and less casual. Business casual DOES NOT mean jeans, tee-shirts, or sneakers.

For business causal either pants or a skirt can be worn. Pants should be a simple color, in general, stick to navy, black, grey, brown, and khaki. Pants can be pleated, flat-fronted, cuffed, or not cuffed.

Skirts should be in a plan color and can be either solid, checkered, stripped, or have a simple pattern. Skirts should not be tight and should come to knee-length when standing. Stocking are not required but is recommended if your skirt is knee length.

Shirts can be tailored shirts, blouses, knit sweaters, or sweater sets. The fit should not be tight and the material can either be cotton, silk, or a blend. Cleavage is NOT appropriate.

Shoes should be black or brown or a neutral color either leather or fabric. For a more conservative look toes should be covered. Chunky heels, platforms, overly high heels, and strap shoes are not appropriate.

In addition to clothes, when dressing in business casual attire it is important to be properly put together. Hair should be clean and neat. All body art and non-earlobe piercings need to be covered. Make-up should be conservative; extreme styles and colors should be avoided. If you choose to wear jewelry it should be conservative. Watches and simple, non-dangling earrings are acceptable. Perfume is not necessary, and in some instances discouraged. If you do wear a fragrance, it should be very light in order to not overwhelm your interviewer, boss, or client.
